US Treasury sanctions crypto exchanges Shelbit and Aban Tether over alleged IRGC-linked fund transfers
The US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned crypto exchanges Shelbit and Aban Tether on August 7, accusing them of moving funds for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. TRM Labs data show the unlicensed, Dubai-registered exchange Shelbit processed more than $6.3 billion in flows between May 2024 and March 2026, which OFAC described as a settlement layer for Iran’s illicit economy. The action is part of the Treasury’s “Economic Fury” campaign and marks the latest step since January targeting Iran-linked crypto platforms.

BitGo begins moving $7.4B WBTC ecosystem to Chainlink CCIP after bridge security concerns
BitGo has started migrating its $7.4 billion Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) ecosystem to Chainlink’s CrossChain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP). The move follows the KelpDAO rsETH bridge hack earlier this year that resulted in about $292 million in losses, which raised questions around LayerZero’s security. The WBTC transition is expected to help shift nearly $15 billion in digital assets from LayerZero’s framework to Chainlink’s protocol, highlighting how bridge risk is pushing issuers toward alternative interoperability standards.

Ether.fi splits restaking from weETH, shifts exposure to new token weETHs
Ether.fi said it has restructured its token design by fully separating restaking from its main token, weETH. Under the change, weETH becomes a plain Ethereum staking token that reflects only base staking yield, without restaking-related risk or returns. The restaking exposure is moved to a newly introduced token, weETHs. Ether.fi said the move is intended to give investors clearer product choices based on different risk preferences, positioning weETH as a simpler yield instrument.
