U.S. diesel hits record $6.29 a gallon, driving up farm and freight costs
U.S. diesel prices hit a record $6.29 per gallon this week, up 68% from a year earlier, pushing up farmers’ fuel and transport bills across the Midwest and California. Some producers say daily fuel costs for a combine have doubled to as much as $1,500. Freight costs are also rising, including a 40% to 120% year-on-year jump to move produce out of California, adding pressure to the food supply chain, according to Energy Information Administration data.
