US and Japan Conduct First Joint Yen Support Operation Since 1998 After Currency Hits 40 Year Low Near 164 per Dollar
The United States and Japan confirmed a coordinated yen buying intervention on July 30 and 31 after the currency slid to about 164 per dollar, the weakest level in 40 years. Japan's Finance Ministry is estimated to have spent 59 to 85 billion dollars, lifting the yen near 155 before it eased back to around 158 to 160 by mid August.
