Brazil mills to let weather, not prices, set sugar output through December harvest end
AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
Reuters reports Brazil's Center-South mills are prioritizing weather over price signals, with El Niño-driven wet conditions limiting the ability to raise the sugar mix despite a ~21% August rally that improved sugar profitability versus ethanol. Harvest delays and lower sucrose concentration keep more cane flowing to ethanol and have already pushed sugar output expectations below 40Mt, increasing near-term supply risk and keeping the market sensitive to further rain.

Brazilian sugar mills are expected to base how much sugar they make primarily on weather conditions rather than market prices. El Nino-driven wet conditions have limited mills’ ability to lift sugar output, with only 42.5% of cane allocated to sugar by early July. Even after sugar futures jumped 21% in August and sugar’s profit advantage over ethanol widened to about 20%, the market has cut expectations for Center-South Brazil sugar production to below 40 million metric tons.
