India’s sugar price slide undercuts raw sugar imports, stalling 1 million-tonne plan
AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
India's sharp drop in ex-mill sugar prices has pushed domestic supply below import parity, reducing incentives to execute the government-approved 1 million tonne raw sugar import program. Despite refinery commitments, only minimal volumes have entered the local market as import economics deteriorate. The tariff-quota extension may not lift inflows unless domestic prices rebound, implying near-term pressure on global sugar trade flows and sentiment.

A sharp drop in domestic sugar prices in India has made imported sugar more expensive than local supplies, weakening incentives to ship in raw sugar. The government previously cleared imports of 1 million tonnes to cool prices, and port-based refineries have committed about 260,000 tonnes, but only a few thousand tonnes have entered the domestic market so far. Although the import window has been extended under a one-time Tariff Rate Quota scheme, the unfavourable price gap is keeping importers on the sidelines.
