Meta faces jury trial over children’s privacy claims as 30 states seek over $1 trillion and changes to Instagram and Facebook

AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
A 30-state US lawsuit alleging child-privacy violations and harm from engagement features poses a material regulatory and litigation overhang for Meta. Plaintiffs seek over $1T and operational remedies such as removing like counts and infinite scroll for minors, echoing a recent New Mexico ruling that imposed $942m in penalties and mandated product changes. An adverse outcome could force broad US platform redesigns, raising compliance costs and pressuring engagement and monetization assumptions.

A jury trial is set to begin on Tuesday in a lawsuit filed in 2023 by 30 U.S. states accusing Meta of violating federal and state children’s privacy laws. The states are seeking upwards of $1 trillion and are asking for product changes on Instagram and Facebook, including ending “like” counts and infinite scroll. A New Mexico judge recently fined Meta a collective $942m and ordered similar changes, and Meta said it would appeal. The states in the broader case represent nearly two-thirds of the U.S. population, and a loss could force significant operational changes; Meta’s market value is about $1.5tn.
