Aug. 19 Crypto Rally Sparks $2.739B in Short Liquidations, a Record High

AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
A sharp Aug 19 rally triggered $2.987B in total crypto liquidations, dominated by $2.739B in shorts—an all-time high for short liquidations. Unlike most major liquidation events driven by selloffs that wipe out levered longs, this episode reflects a powerful short squeeze. Forced short covering likely intensified spot and perp buying pressure, increasing near-term volatility and reshaping positioning and funding dynamics across majors.

ME News reported that on Aug. 19 (UTC+8), a sharp crypto market rally triggered widespread forced liquidations, led overwhelmingly by short positions. Coinglass data show total liquidations across the market reached $2.987 billion that day, including $2.739 billion in shorts and about $248 million in longs. By historical measures, Aug. 19 ranked as the eighth-largest single-day liquidation event in crypto history, while short-side liquidations set an all-time record. The session also stood out from the top 10—and even the top 30—largest liquidation episodes on record: most prior spikes were driven by selloffs that wiped out long leveraged positions. This time, the move was fueled by rising prices, with shorts taking the bulk of the hit. Analysts noted that large-scale short liquidations can intensify upside momentum through a classic "short squeeze". As accumulated short leverage was forcibly unwound, the resulting buy pressure helped accelerate the surge in crypto asset prices. (Source: ODAILY)
