Ethereum Foundation core researcher Justin Drake said on Aug. 13, 2026, that the foundation will move away from the Poseidon hash function in its planned future Ethereum base-layer design. He said advances in proof systems operating over binary fields have shifted the tradeoff, allowing standard hash functions to match Poseidon’s SNARK performance. The foundation is targeting a production-grade leanVM for 2027, with layer rollouts penciled in for 2028.
