U.S. Coast Guard finds outdated, high-risk tech on seized ‘dark fleet’ oil tankers

U.S. Coast Guard cyber teams found that so-called “dark fleet” tankers commonly rely on outdated and hazardous technology, leaving them vulnerable to hacking that could trigger explosions or oil spills. U.S. officials have shared details of the vulnerabilities with allies to encourage tougher interdiction efforts. France, the United Kingdom and Germany have since stepped up actions to block or seize tankers carrying Russian oil, and U.K. forces boarded a Russia-linked oil tanker in the English Channel.
