Starship’s first orbital flight puts Falcon 9 and Dragon retirements in focus, sparking concern across satellite sector

AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
SpaceX's first orbital Starship mission and plans to sunset Falcon 9/Dragon highlight a potential near-term launch capacity squeeze for commercial satellite operators, with market launch prices already rising and alternatives (New Glenn, Vulcan) facing reliability issues. SpaceX financials show space segment losses versus strong Starlink profitability, underscoring a strategic pivot that could reprice access to orbit and increase scheduling uncertainty for space-related supply chains.

As Starship test flights accelerate, SpaceX has said it plans to phase out the Falcon 9 rocket and the Dragon spacecraft in favor of the fully reusable Starship system. In its first quarterly earnings report, SpaceX said its space segment posted a $542 million loss, while its Starlink business generated nearly $1.7 billion. Launch-to-orbit costs are currently about $7,500 to $10,000 per kilogram, slightly higher than a decade ago.
