UK borrowing rises to £18.3bn in August, outpacing forecasts ahead of October budget

AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
UK public borrowing rose to £18.3bn in August, beating both market and OBR forecasts and pushing yearto-date borrowing £8.1bn above plan. With debt near £3tn (~94% of GDP) and inflation at 3.1% lifting debt-service costs, fiscal headroom ahead of the October budget appears to be shrinking. Higher gilt yields and a softer pound reflect increased UK fiscal and rate-risk sensitivity.

The UK posted public sector net borrowing of £18.3bn in August, above expectations of £15.6bn and above the Office for Budget Responsibility’s forecast. Borrowing so far this financial year is £8.1bn higher than the OBR projected. Public sector net debt is just below £3 trillion, around 94% of GDP, the highest since the early 1960s. With inflation reported at 3.1%, debt interest costs are adding further pressure.
