Oil above $US100 a barrel lifts jet fuel to $US163, squeezing Qantas and Virgin costs

AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
Escalating US-Iran hostilities and Red Sea disruptions have pushed crude above $US100/bbl and jet fuel to ~$US163/bbl, amplifying inflationary pressure via transport and fuel costs. Airlines report sharp increases in fuel bills and reduced jet-fuel hedge coverage, implying greater earnings sensitivity and potential capacity and pricing adjustments. The backdrop supports tighter energy supply risk premia and raises broader macro uncertainty.

Crude oil climbed above $US100 a barrel last week, with jet fuel rising to $US163 as the war drags on. Qantas said its fuel bill increased by $610 million in the year to June 2026, and it expects jet fuel prices to stay elevated through the rest of calendar year 2026. Virgin Australia said it is more exposed after its hedging of jet fuel refining margins fell from around 80 per cent to only 20 per cent for 1H27, and its fuel costs could rise by as much as $700 million. Average diesel prices have also jumped 45%.
