Access, Zenith, UBA and other Nigerian banks step up crackdown as fraud-linked BVNs hit 13,117 in 2025
AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
Nigeria's central bank reported a 38% rise in BVNs flagged for fraud and a 19.9% y/y contraction in outstanding consumer credit, reflecting tighter compliance and high borrowing costs. The data suggests stricter retail credit underwriting and a shift toward shorter-tenor lending as banks manage funding mismatches. While improved BVN enrollment signals deeper formalization, near-term implications are mainly localized to Nigerian banking risk appetite rather than global markets.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) reported 13,117 Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs) linked to fraud in 2025, as total BVN registrations rose to 67.82 million. Over the same period, outstanding consumer credit fell 19.89% year on year to N3.78 trillion, with personal loans shrinking sharply while retail loans climbed 63.77%. The figures point to tighter anti-fraud and credit-risk controls that are pushing commercial banks to narrow access to personal lending.
