FAO: Global sugar prices jump 11.9% in August after India allows duty-free raw sugar imports

AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
FAO reported the Sugar Price Index rose 11.9% m/m in August, driven by expectations of weaker EU beet yields from adverse weather, El Niño risks in key Asian producers, lower Brazil output, and India's duty-free raw sugar imports. The broader FAO Food Price Index also increased, highlighting a rising climate and logistics risk premium across agricultural markets, potentially tightening near-term supply expectations and increasing food-related inflation sensitivity.

The FAO Sugar Price Index jumped 11.9% in August from the previous month, driven by weaker output prospects in Europe due to adverse weather and El Niño-related concerns in key Asian producers. India’s announcement of duty-free imports of raw sugar also contributed to the rise. Over the same period, FAO indexes for cereals, dairy, vegetable oils and meat also increased, according to the UN agency.
