BoE chief economist Huw Pill urges rate rise to 4% amid Middle East-driven inflation risks

AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
BoE chief economist Huw Pill argued for a near-term rate increase to counter inflation risks linked to Middle East energy shocks, pushing back on the MPC's "wait-and-see" approach after rates were held at 3.75%. A more hawkish policy signal tightens UK financial conditions and can lift UK rate expectations, impacting GBP and UK risk assets. Bailey also flagged global volatility risks from an AI-bubble correction and energy-supply shocks.

Bank of England chief economist Huw Pill reiterated his concerns about holding interest rates steady, arguing that inflation risks tied to the energy crisis in the Middle East should be contained with a rate increase. He said he was uncomfortable with a “wait-and-see” approach on the Monetary Policy Committee and noted he was one of two members backing a hike in July. Pill added that a move higher would not necessarily mark the start of a prolonged, aggressive tightening cycle.
