Australia’s inflation rises to 4% in year to August; Chalmers cites fuel costs and expiring energy rebates

AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
Australia's CPI re-accelerated to 4% YoY in August (from 3.5%), while core inflation held at an elevated 3.6%, reinforcing concerns about sticky price pressures. Officials attributed the rise to higher global oil prices linked to Middle East instability and the unwind of energy rebates. The data increases uncertainty around the RBA's reaction function, supporting higher rate volatility and near-term sensitivity in AUD pricing.

Australia’s consumer price index rose to 4% in the year to August, up from 3.5% in July, while underlying inflation held at 3.6%, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Treasurer Jim Chalmers attributed the increase to higher fuel costs and the unwinding of last year’s energy rebates. Both readings remain well above the central bank’s 2.5% target band. Markets are concerned sticky inflation could force the Reserve Bank to raise rates again.
