WSJ: Polymarket CEO allegedly urged staff to keep expanding and "pay a fine" if regulators discovered issues during a $10M stolen-card fraud attempt

AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
WSJ's report that fraudsters attempted to route at least $10M via stolen debit cards through Polymarket, with unusually high deposit rejection rates, raises compliance and operational risk concerns around crypto-adjacent betting and on/off-ramp controls. Allegations that leadership prioritized growth over regulatory exposure could intensify scrutiny from regulators and payment partners, potentially tightening access to fiat rails and weighing on broader crypto risk sentiment short term.

The Wall Street Journal reported that in February, fraudsters connected stolen debit cards to Polymarket accounts in the U.S., attempting to route at least $10 million through wagers and subsequent withdrawals. At one stage, the company's payment processor flagged more than 80% of processed deposits as fraudulent, far above the industry norm of about 1%. People familiar with the matter said CEO Shayne Coplan responded to employee concerns by encouraging the team to continue growing, suggesting the company could pay a fine if regulators later uncovered the activity. Polymarket said it has procedures in place to identify and respond to suspicious activity, and that it is committed to cooperating with regulators and law enforcement.
