U.S. sanctions Iran crypto exchange BitBank over alleged IRGC funding tied to Strait of Hormuz payments

AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
The U.S. Treasury sanctioned Iran's crypto exchange BitBank and related entities for allegedly facilitating IRGC-linked payments and sanctions evasion. This expands enforcement risk across centralized and offshore-facing crypto infrastructure, raising compliance burdens for counterparties and potentially tightening fiat and liquidity access for higher-risk venues. Near term, the headline can pressure risk appetite in crypto via elevated regulatory and geopolitical uncertainty.

The U.S. Treasury Department said it has imposed sanctions on Iranian cryptocurrency exchange BitBank, alleging the platform is controlled by sanctioned Iranian financier Babak Zanjani and has been used to facilitate payments for safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz and to move hundreds of millions of dollars to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The announcement was made on Sept. 18 (UTC+8) and framed as part of "Operation Economic Outcast," a U.S. initiative aimed at disrupting Iran's digital-asset-based sanctions-evasion network. Treasury also sanctioned Pishtaz Simorgh Electronic Trade Company, described as the software developer behind BitBank, along with three of Zanjani's close associates. In addition, the U.S. extended sanctions to previously designated entities Zedcex and Zedxion and multiple affiliated companies operating in Iran, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. (Source: PANews)
