U.S. Treasury to Double Long-Dated Bond Buyback Size
AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
The U.S. Treasury will at least double the maximum size of its long-term nominal coupon repurchase operations to $4B per transaction for 10"20y and 20"30y sectors, effective Sept 9 through Nov 4, 2026. Larger buybacks can improve secondary-market liquidity and reduce dislocation risk in long-end rates, potentially easing broader financial conditions and supporting risk assets via lower term-premium volatility.

Aug. 19 (BlockBeats) — The U.S. Treasury said it will at least double the size of its liquidity-support repurchase operations for nominal coupon securities in the long end of the curve, covering the 10- to 20-year and 20- to 30-year sectors.
The current cap is $2 billion per operation. Going forward, the Treasury will lift the maximum to at least $4 billion per transaction. The change takes effect Sept. 9, 2026, and will remain in place for the rest of the current refunding quarter through Nov. 4, 2026.
The Treasury said it will provide additional details on the size of future buybacks at its next quarterly refunding meeting on Nov. 4, 2026. The expanded program is intended to strengthen liquidity support in the market for long-dated nominal Treasuries. Updated temporary Treasury buyback arrangements will be announced at a later date.
