The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said late Aug. 14 it has called off its Aug. 15 meeting on the proposed "Regulation Crypto" rule, citing unforeseen scheduling conflicts. The agency has not set a new date.
The proposal is viewed as the SEC's first major rulemaking effort focused on digital assets. It is expected to outline a limited exemption framework for issuing crypto securities, allowing issuers to move projects forward without triggering full registration requirements and to transition out of SEC oversight at later stages.
SEC Chair Paul Atkins has previously described the rulemaking as a key pillar of the agency's digital-asset regulatory agenda. Market participants had also been watching for parallel progress on a "tokenized securities innovation exemption," which has also been delayed.
On the legislative track, the Senate's Digital Asset Market Clarity Act remains unresolved. Bipartisan talks and negotiations with the White House have yet to produce a path to clear the 60-vote threshold. Both avenues for crypto regulation—administrative rulemaking and congressional action—are currently stalled.
