US Treasury signals possible yen market intervention on Friday, alerts banks

AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
Reuters reports the US Treasury, via the New York Fed, told banks it may intervene in the yen market, following Japan's large-scale yen-buying and US rate checks that traders interpret as groundwork for coordinated action. Explicit US involvement in FX intervention is rare, raising event risk and potentially increasing short-term volatility in USD/JPY and broader G10 FX as markets reassess policy resolve and coordination signals.

The US Treasury has notified banks through the New York Fed that it may intervene in the yen market on Friday and wants institutions prepared for additional moves, Reuters reported, citing a person familiar with the matter. The message comes a day after Tokyo launched heavy yen-buying operations that Bank of Japan data indicates totaled nearly $59 billion. US authorities also conducted exchange-rate checks that traders viewed as groundwork for potential coordinated action. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said this week the yen is substantially undervalued. Direct US participation in currency intervention is rare, with the last instance in coordinated G7 action in 2011.
