Fed Seen More Likely to Stand Pat After Surprise July Job Loss

AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
A surprise July payroll contraction and large downward revisions materially weaken the US labor backdrop, pushing market pricing toward a higher likelihood of the Fed holding rates steady rather than hiking. Softer growth with contained wage pressure typically lowers yields and supports broader risk appetite. For crypto, reduced odds of tighter policy and a potentially more accommodative forward path are a near-term tailwind for non-yielding assets.

The U.S. labor market delivered a sharp downside surprise in July, prompting investors to scale back expectations for a Federal Reserve rate increase at the September meeting. Nonfarm payrolls fell by 23,000, flipping from anticipated growth of about 80,000 jobs to an outright contraction. Following the release, market-implied odds of a September hike slid from roughly 57% to about 43.9%. By contrast, the probability the Fed keeps its policy rate unchanged in the current 3.5% to 3.75% range rose to nearly 60%. Revisions compounded the weakness. Prior months' payroll figures were revised down by a combined 103,000, indicating the labor backdrop was softer than previously understood even before July's decline. Other details were mixed. The unemployment rate edged lower to 4.1% from 4.2%. Wage growth was essentially unchanged at around 3.2% year over year, a pace that neither meaningfully intensifies inflation concerns nor points to a sudden drop-off in consumer spending. The report lands as the Federal Open Market Committee remains divided. At the July 29'30 meeting, officials voted to hold rates steady, with reported dissent and a split described as roughly 9'3 or 10'2, as a minority argued for firmer action against inflation. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, who took office on May 22, has signaled a more hawkish stance on inflation. Alongside Governor Lisa Cook, Warsh has repeatedly stressed the need to stay vigilant on price stability. Markets reacted in line with the shift in rate expectations. With traders leaning toward a hold'or even lower'rate outlook, bond prices typically rise and yields fall. Risk assets could also benefit if the more dovish repricing persists. For crypto, a Fed that keeps rates steady or hints it could consider cuts later tends to be supportive of Bitcoin and other digital assets. Lower rates reduce the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets. Beyond the headline miss, the 103,000-job downward revision may prove more consequential. Revisions reset the baseline policymakers use to judge momentum, and a weaker starting point raises the bar for justifying another rate hike.
