Iran's foreign minister Alirzaei said Sunday that any reopening of the Strait of Hormuz will depend on whether the United States meets Iran's conditions, adding that negotiations could still offer a way out of the current impasse.
Tehran has previously demanded that Washington halt what it calls "aggressive actions," end a maritime blockade and economic war, and release Iranian assets.
President Donald Trump said Saturday he rejected Iran's latest conditional proposal. The Wall Street Journal, citing U.S. officials, reported Trump is expected to resume airstrikes on Iran after the November midterm elections.
Also on Sunday, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy said it captured a U.S. military Remus 600 underwater drone in the Strait of Hormuz and has transferred the device to relevant personnel for data extraction. U.S. Central Command has not immediately commented.
With U.S.-Iran tensions rising, energy flows in the Middle East have faced significant constraints. WTI crude settled this week at $92.41 a barrel, down 7.9% on the week, while Brent crude ended at $104.32 a barrel, roughly flat.
