India's edible oil imports fall 30% in June as palm oil shipments halve

AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
India's June edible oil imports fell 30% y/y as palm oil purchases halved, reflecting biofuel blending mandates in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the US diverting vegetable oils toward fuel and lifting spot prices. The compression of palm's discount to soy oil signals tighter cross-oil spreads and reduced arbitrage demand. Despite the monthly drop, YTD imports remain higher, limiting immediate demand-collapse concerns.

India's edible oil imports in June 2026 plunged 30% year on year to 1.11 million tonnes, driven mainly by a sharp drop in palm oil arrivals. Palm oil imports halved to 487,000 tonnes. The Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA) said mandatory biofuel blending policies in Indonesia, Malaysia and the United States have redirected more global vegetable oil supply toward fuel use. The shift has lifted spot prices and narrowed palm oil's discount to soyoil to below USD 50 per tonne. Despite the steep monthly decline, cumulative imports in the first eight months of the 2025/26 oil year still rose 7% from a year earlier to 103.88 million tonnes.
