Hong Kong Police said the city recorded 20,613 fraud cases in the first half of this year, with total losses estimated at about HK$3.5 billion, according to Odaily Planet Daily.
Investment-related fraud accounted for 2,151 cases—roughly one-tenth of the total—but generated outsized losses of HK$1.66 billion.
Police cited a cryptocurrency-linked investment scam that caused losses of around HK$84 million. Victims were induced to transfer crypto assets to wallets provided by the fraudsters and only realized they had been scammed after they were unable to withdraw their funds.
Authorities also provided an update on the JPEX virtual-asset fraud case, which remains under investigation. So far, about 2,800 victims have been identified, with losses totaling roughly HK$1.6 billion. Since 2023, police have arrested 81 people; 29 have been charged with conspiracy to defraud, money laundering and obstructing justice. (Ming Pao)
