Fed July Minutes: Several Officials Weighed a Rate Hike

AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
Fed minutes show a meaningful minority favored a July hike and many still see further tightening as likely if inflation does not cool. The emphasis on data-dependence alongside persistent upside inflation risk reinforces a higher-for-longer rates narrative, pressuring risk assets and supporting the USD via wider rate differentials and tighter financial conditions in the near term.

Minutes from the Federal Reserve's July meeting show that a number of officials favored raising interest rates, and many said additional tightening could be warranted if inflation does not continue to ease. Policymakers also emphasized that uncertainty played a major role in their deliberations. According to the minutes, participants reiterated that incoming economic data would be central to future policy debates: "Regarding the outlook for monetary policy, participants reaffirmed that their interpretation of future data would be a key component of policy discussions." The FOMC voted 9–3 in July to keep the benchmark rate in a 3.5% to 3.75% range. Logan, Harker, and Kashkari dissented, preferring a 25 basis-point increase. Two regional Fed presidents who did not have voting rights in July—Schmid and Mushallem—later said they would have backed a rate hike had they been able to vote. Most of the meeting's policy discussion focused on differing views of the inflation outlook. "Most participants anticipated that inflation would gradually decline over the remainder of the year as the effects of tariffs and previous energy price increases fade, but many participants noted that the risk of inflation remaining elevated persists," the minutes said.
