EU MiCA crackdown forces more than 1,700 unlicensed crypto platforms to shut down
AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
Full MiCA enforcement has triggered EU shutdown orders for over 1,700 unlicensed crypto platforms, forcing an estimated 10 million users to migrate assets to a limited set of authorized providers. The transition is being exploited by scammers impersonating regulators and licensed exchanges, raising near-term operational and counterparty risk for retail flows and smaller venues. Heightened compliance scrutiny and fraud risk can depress activity and risk appetite across spot markets.

ME News reported that as of Aug. 16 (UTC+8), the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation, fully in force since July 1, has prompted authorities to order more than 1,700 unlicensed crypto platforms to cease operations and steer users toward licensed providers. Only 323 firms currently hold valid authorizations.
The compliance push is expected to affect about 10 million users who need to move their assets. Regulators say fraudsters are capitalizing on the disruption by impersonating supervisory bodies and licensed exchanges to send bogus "migration" notices, aiming to lure users into transferring funds to counterfeit platforms.
France's Financial Markets Authority (AMF) said scammers have posed as AMF staff to demand "management fees." The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) also confirmed that its name and branding are being misused. The Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets warned that the migration process itself has become an attack vector, urging users to verify providers via ESMA's official register and to treat unsolicited transfer requests with caution.
