Ethereum core developers have added EIP-8141, known as "Frame Transactions," to the roadmap for the 2027 Hegotá upgrade, according to Huo Xing Finance. During the Aug. 27 core developers call, the item was tagged "Scheduled for Inclusion," signaling it is slated to ship with the network upgrade rather than remain a tentative candidate.
Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum cofounder and one of the proposal's 10 authors, wrote on X Sunday night that Frames have made substantial progress in recent months.
The proposal is designed to address a common friction point: users may hold stablecoins but be unable to send transactions because they lack ETH for gas. Frames break a transaction into separate stages—authorization, fee payment and instruction execution—so the account initiating the action can be different from the account paying the fee. In practice, a payments app could sponsor gas directly, or charge users in stablecoins and settle the ETH gas cost on their behalf. The network would still denominate fees in ETH, but end users would no longer need to buy and hold ETH just to transact.
Unlike current wallet approaches that depend on third-party services, Frames would implement this capability within Ethereum's standard transaction flow. The design also supports atomic bundling of steps that must occur together—for example, approving and submitting a token transfer—so a failed transaction automatically revokes the authorization.
Frames also let accounts set customized approval policies, enabling features such as key rotation or a shift to quantum-resistant keys without forcing users to move funds to a new address.
The specification is still in draft form and may change ahead of the Hegotá upgrade. Frames are not yet available for users.
