CFTC uses emergency powers to keep Kalshi trading as New York lawsuit escalates

AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
The CFTC's use of emergency authority to keep Kalshi trading during New York's lawsuit highlights escalating regulatory and jurisdictional conflict over event contracts. The dispute—including a bid to block nationwide offerings and large claimed damages—raises uncertainty around the legal status, product continuity, and compliance standards for prediction-market venues. Near term, this may lift regulatory risk premia across adjacent exchange and fintech exposures.

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has invoked its emergency authority to keep prediction-market exchange Kalshi operating while it faces a lawsuit from New York. On Tuesday, the regulator directed Kalshi to continue running the exchange in line with the Commodity Exchange Act's core principles after the company notified the agency of a market emergency. New York Attorney General Letitia James filed suit on July 31, seeking to block Kalshi from offering event contracts nationwide and requesting more than $36 billion in damages. The CFTC has also filed suits against nine states tied to the dispute.
