CFTC Signals It Will Move Ahead on Crypto Rules if CLARITY Act Stalls

AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
CFTC Chair Selig signaled the agency may advance a crypto regulatory framework using existing authority if the CLARITY Act remains delayed, including asserting oversight of registered and unregistered exchanges and outlining compliant routes for onchain protocol developers. The message reduces legislative uncertainty but raises enforcement and compliance risk, potentially affecting U.S. market access, venue operations, and liquidity conditions across major digital assets.

CFTC Chair Michael S. Selig told the agency's Innovation Advisory Committee that prolonged delays to the CLARITY Act will not stop the commission from acting on cryptocurrency oversight. He said the CFTC would use its existing authority to push forward regulation of the crypto market, including placing both currently operating and unregistered crypto exchanges under CFTC supervision. The agency is also weighing compliant routes for onchain financial protocol developers to enter the U.S. market lawfully. Selig said passage of the CLARITY Act remains the preferred option because it would put regulatory boundaries into statute. Still, he added that even without congressional action, the CFTC is prepared to draft its own rules to build a more comprehensive framework for the U.S. digital asset market.
