Bybit (@Bybit_Official) has brought a civil case in US federal court against North Korea, its Reconnaissance General Bureau and the Lazarus Group, seeking remedies tied to the February 2025 theft of about $1.5B in $ETH—still the largest crypto heist on record.
The exchange also obtained a preliminary injunction preventing unidentified "John Doe" defendants from moving specific stolen assets that have been identified, pending the outcome of the litigation.
CEO Ben Zhou (@benbybit) described the incident as "an attack on trust in our industry," casting the lawsuit as part of broader recovery and accountability efforts. While suing a sovereign state is widely seen as difficult, the freeze order strengthens the on-chain enforcement angle, and the civil action proceeds separately from US criminal investigations.
