BOJ Strikes a Softer Note, Stirring Volatility Across U.S. Treasuries and Equity Futures
AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
The BOJ's 25bp hike paired with a softer forward tone surprised markets, triggering cross-asset repricing. The move propagated into higher U.S. Treasury yields and a reversal lower in S&P 500 futures, highlighting sensitivity to global policy expectations and debt constraints. Japan's elevated debt-to-GDP raises doubts about sustained tightening, increasing FX and rates volatility, with USD/JPY a key transmission channel.

CoinDesk cited foreign media reports that the Bank of Japan raised its policy rate by 25 basis points but stopped short of signaling additional tightening, catching markets off guard. Market strategist Gareth Soloway said the shift in tone quickly rippled into U.S. rates and equity futures.
U.S. Treasuries moved first. The 10-year yield briefly climbed back to 4.984% as investors reacted to what Soloway described as a more dovish message from the BOJ.
Equity index futures reversed in after-hours trading. S&P 500 futures pulled back as higher yields weighed on sentiment and investors questioned whether major central banks will be less hawkish than expected as they juggle debt burdens with the prospect of further tightening.
Soloway also pointed to Japan's debt load, estimating it at roughly 230% of GDP. He said the figure is pushing markets to reassess the trajectory of global central-bank tightening and is adding to cross-asset volatility.
