Potential consequences include renewed prosecution and additional fines, which could tighten market liquidity, widen risk premia across crypto, and weigh on sentiment broadly even absent any new wrongdoing allegations.

The U.S. Department of Justice is assessing whether Binance may have breached its 2023 settlement as part of a probe into possible violations of U.S. sanctions on Iran, Bloomberg reported. Federal prosecutors have sought to seize $61 million said to be tied to Iranian oil sales and allegedly laundered through Binance. If prosecutors determine the agreement was violated, Binance could face renewed criminal exposure and additional penalties running into the billions. Authorities have not accused Binance or any of its employees of wrongdoing in the current investigation. Binance said it is continuing to tighten compliance controls and is cooperating with law enforcement.
