Bank of Baroda slips 2% as Q1 results raise concerns despite growth headline

AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
Bank of Baroda's reported Q1 profit slump is driven by a large one-off litigation expense, but investors are more focused on weakening core metrics: NIM compression and a sharp drop in fee income. Broker downgrades reinforce concerns about earnings quality. A potential 1TB customer data leak adds reputational and regulatory overhang, increasing risk premia for financials and weighing on broader risk sentiment.

Bank of Baroda reported results for the June quarter of 2024, with net profit plunging 72% year on year to 127.8 billion rupees. The sharp drop was largely attributed to a one-off charge linked to a $600 million settlement expense tied to the NMC Health litigation. Beyond the exceptional item, investors also focused on pressure in core operating metrics. Net interest margin (NIM) eased to 2.77%, while core fee income fell 22% from a year earlier. Several brokerages cut earnings forecasts and reduced target prices following the release. Separately, the bank said it is investigating a suspected customer data leak involving around 1TB of data. Shares fell about 2% on the day, reflecting market concerns over earnings quality as well as potential reputational and regulatory risks.
