Ethereum daily transactions hit record 1.87M on Dec. 31 as active addresses reach highest since May 2021

Ethereum's 7-day moving average of daily transactions reached a record 1.87 million on December 31, surpassing the previous peak of 1.61 million set on May 10, 2021, and a more recent high of 1.73 million on August 9, 2025, data cited by The Block show. The network also saw 728,904 active addresses at year-end, the highest level since May 12, 2021, while new addresses climbed to 270,160 on December 31, marking the largest single-day increase since early 2018. LVRG Research director Nick Ruck said the surge in on-chain activity has been mainly driven by network upgrades that reduced transaction costs, improved scalability and drew more institutional participation through ETFs and tokenization of real-world assets.
