South Korea fines Bithumb $246 million for AML violations, orders six-month partial suspension

South Korea's Financial Intelligence Unit fined crypto exchange Bithumb 36.8 billion won (about $246 million) and ordered a six-month partial suspension of operations for anti-money laundering rule breaches, CoinDesk reports. The Financial Services Commission said the sanctions under the Act on Reporting and Utilization of Specific Financial Transaction Information cited roughly 6.65 million violations, including about 3.55 million failures in customer due diligence and around 3.04 million failures to block restricted transactions. Regulators also warned Bithumb's CEO and suspended its head of compliance reporting for six months, following onsite inspections at five major exchanges between 2024 and 2025.
