SEC Weighs New Rulebook for On-Chain Markets and Crypto Software
Odaily Planet Daily reports that U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chair Paul Atkins said the agency is evaluating new rules aimed at on-chain financial markets and related software applications.
Atkins noted that software-based protocols such as DeFi do not fit neatly into legacy categories like exchanges, broker-dealers, or clearinghouses. He said a single protocol can bundle functions that are typically separated in traditional market structure, including trade execution, collateral management, liquidity routing, and settlement.
Market observers view the comments as signaling a more open posture toward the crypto sector than under former SEC Chair Gary Gensler. The SEC is also considering novel exemptive approaches for tokenized securities and pushing forward efforts to clarify a digital-asset classification framework.
