Sub-$400 ETH Holders Sold Over $1 Billion Near $4,000 Price Peaks
Ethereum holders with an average cost basis below $400 repeatedly realized large profits when ETH broke above $4,000 in 2024 and 2025, on-chain analyst Murphy said on January 1. Data show ETH held for 5 to 7 years has an average acquisition cost of $378, and when the price exceeded $4,000, significant amounts of this long-dormant supply were sold, including over $600 million in single-day realized profit from 5+ year holdings in March 2024 and around $1 billion in June. Murphy also noted that in September 2025 for 7+ year coins and in October 2025 for 10+ year coins, single-day cash-outs each surpassed $500 million, and ETH entered a local top phase after these profits were taken. Since May 2024, the supply of ETH held for more than 5 years has gradually declined, but whales with cost basis under $400 still control 21.01 million ETH.
