Gnosis and Zisk Unveil Ethereum Economic Zone Rollup Framework Backed by the Ethereum Foundation

Gnosis co-founder Friederike Ernst and Zisk founder Jordi Baylina announced the "Ethereum Economic Zone" (EEZ) on Sunday at the EthCC conference in Cannes, according to The Block. The initiative is being co-funded by the Ethereum Foundation. EEZ is designed as a rollup framework that lets smart contracts on participating rollups make synchronized, composable calls with Ethereum mainnet and other EEZ rollups, while preserving the same security assurances as deployments made directly on Ethereum. The system uses ETH as the default gas token, aiming to remove the need for additional cross-chain bridge infrastructure. "Ethereum doesn't have a scaling problem—it has a fragmentation problem," Ernst said, arguing that each new Layer 2 tends to create separate liquidity pools and bridges that function as isolated ecosystems. Founding members of the EEZ alliance include DeFi lending protocol Aave, block builders Titan and Beaver Build, RWA platform Centrifuge, and tokenized stocks project xStocks. The project will be set up as a Swiss nonprofit, with all software released under free and open-source licenses. Organizers say the goal is to keep governance to a minimum and ultimately make the system immutable. Technical specifications and performance benchmarks are expected in the coming weeks.
