Ethereum Foundation Unveils 2026 Protocol Roadmap Targeting Scaling, Security and Quantum Resistance

The Ethereum Foundation released a protocol roadmap for 2026 focused on scaling, security and quantum computing preparedness, with plans to expand the gas limit beyond 100 million units, enhance Proposer-Builder Separation and advance zkEVM client development. The roadmap includes gradual increases to blob parameters for rollup-centric scaling, multilayered security to strengthen censorship resistance, and research into quantum-resistant cryptographic algorithms with academic partners. Research and specification work will dominate 2025, with testnets launching in late 2025 and mainnet activations progressing through 2026 via Ethereum's established governance processes, the foundation said.
