BIP110 Sparks Debate Over Bitcoin's Future Upgrade Flexibility
Bitcoin Improvement Proposal BIP110 has drawn criticism after Blockstream cofounder Adam Back retweeted a warning that it could limit Bitcoin's long-term upgrade flexibility, ChainCatcher reports. The proposal, framed as a temporary soft fork to remove onchain "junk data" and reduce bloat from protocols such as Ordinals, would disable OP_SUCCESS opcodes in Tapscript—mechanisms reserved for future soft fork upgrades. BIP110 also introduces a 257-byte size cap on Taproot control blocks, potentially constraining Layer 2 designs like BitVM that rely on complex script execution. While presented as a temporary measure, Bitcoin soft fork upgrades typically require years of coordination, meaning such restrictions could have lasting effects, ChainCatcher noted.
