CaixaBank Secures MiCA Crypto License, Becomes Spain's Sixth Authorized Bank
CaixaBank has been authorized as a Crypto-Asset Service Provider (CASP) under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework, according to market sources cited by Mars Finance. The approval makes it Spain's sixth bank licensed to offer crypto-asset custody, trading and transfer services.
Spain's six MiCA-authorized institutions, in order of approval, are BBVA, Openbank (a subsidiary of Santander Group), Cecabank, Renta 4 Banco, Kutxabank and CaixaBank. BBVA became the first to obtain approval in 2025 and launched Bitcoin and Ethereum trading and custody services in July that year.
A MiCA license functions as an EU-wide regulatory passport, enabling approved firms to operate across member states without seeking separate national authorizations. Spain's transition period runs through June 30, 2026; after that date, unlicensed entities will be barred from providing crypto-asset services.
