Aave Hit by $8.45B Deposit Run After $292M KelpDAO LayerZero Bridge Exploit

Aave was swept up in the fallout from a $292 million exploit tied to KelpDAO's LayerZero bridge in April 2026, sparking a rapid withdrawal of deposits that totaled $8.45 billion within 48 hours and highlighting ongoing fragilities across major DeFi venues. The protocol stabilized conditions after assembling an emergency $300 million backstop, including 25,000 ETH from the Aave DAO and 5,000 ETH contributed by founder Stani Kulechov. Kulechov said the episode underscored Aave's resilience. Looking ahead, Aave plans to reduce systemic risk with a modular architecture in its V4 upgrade, designed to keep bridge failures from cascading through the broader protocol.
