Suspect Arrested in Saint Martin Over $20 Million Missing From U.S. Government Crypto Wallet
French Gendarmerie tactical units, working with FBI agents, arrested John Daghita—also known online as "John" or "Lick"—on the Caribbean island of Saint Martin on suspicion of stealing over $20 million in cryptocurrency from a U.S. government-controlled wallet, Odaily Planet Daily reports. The funds are tied to assets seized during the 2016 Bitfinex hack. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the arrest on social media and posted images showing seized hardware wallets and a briefcase containing a large amount of U.S. cash. The investigation centers on the October 2024 disappearance of over $20 million from a federal custody wallet, after blockchain analysis linked around $24.9 million of the seized funds to addresses controlled by the suspect within a wider address cluster managing over $90 million in suspicious assets. Blockchain researcher ZachXBT publicly traced transaction flows related to the compromised government wallet in January 2026, and the suspect's father, Dean Daghita, heads Command Services & Support, a firm awarded a U.S. Marshals Service contract in October 2024 to handle custody and liquidation of certain seized cryptocurrencies.
