Bithumb Internal Ledger Error: 249 Users Erroneously Credited 620,000 BTC

South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb erroneously credited 249 users with a total of 620,000 BTC, valued significantly higher than the intended 620,000 won, during a 'Random Chest' marketing event on February 6. The incident, attributed to a backend system misconfiguration, was confined to Bithumb's internal ledger and did not impact the blockchain, as reported by Odaily Planet Daily. The error briefly caused the platform's BTC/KRW pair to plummet by nearly 17%. Bithumb swiftly froze affected accounts, recovering over 99% of the miscredited funds within 35 minutes and covering the remaining 1,788 BTC with company capital. Following the event, South Korea's Financial Supervisory Service initiated on-site inspections at Bithumb, with plans to extend reviews to other major platforms like Upbit and Coinone, signaling a push for enhanced digital asset regulatory oversight.
