Kenya DCI creates specialised unit to tackle KES5.6 billion crypto fraud losses in 2024

Kenya's Directorate of Criminal Investigations has set up a specialised unit to investigate cryptocurrency fraud after local investors reportedly lost up to KES5.6 billion ($43.3 million) in 2024. Authorities say crypto-related cybercrime losses rose 73% year on year, while Kenya's parliament has moved ahead with a Virtual Asset Service Provider Bill and new blockchain investigation training to strengthen oversight and enforcement.
