Hong Kong Monetary Authority to Apply Basel Crypto-Asset Capital Rules from 1 January 2026
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority will implement Basel Committee bank capital standards for crypto-assets starting 1 January 2026, covering Bitcoin, Ethereum, stablecoins and other digital assets. HKMA's Supervisory Policy Manual CRP-1, issued on 27 November 2025, sets out the classification and treatment of these assets, with markets watching for regulatory and institutional impacts. Recent Bitcoin market data show sizable capitalization, trading volume and price moves as the sector prepares for tighter oversight.
