Trafigura, Tether in talks on USDT payments pilot at El Salvador gas stations
Trafigura Group is holding early-stage talks with Tether on a pilot program to accept USDT for fuel purchases in El Salvador, Bloomberg reported. The trial would run at Puma Energy stations, the Trafigura subsidiary, allowing customers to pay for fuel or in-store items such as snacks using the stablecoin.
Under the proposed setup, an intermediary would convert USDT to U.S. dollars and remit the funds to Trafigura. The plan would require regulatory clearance, and a Puma Energy spokesperson said discussions remain focused on assessing technical feasibility.
If launched, the initiative would be Tether's first effort with a major commodities trader to test stablecoin use cases.
