Canada tables Bill C-25 to ban crypto and other hard-to-trace political donations

The Canadian government has introduced Bill C-25 to prohibit political donations made using cryptocurrencies, money orders and prepaid cards across the federal electoral system. The proposal cites limited traceability and difficulties verifying donor identities. Crypto donations have been allowed since 2019 but have seen little uptake. Canada's Chief Electoral Officer, who previously favoured tighter oversight, now supports an outright ban.
