Madras High Court Declares Cryptocurrency as Property, Halts WazirX XRP Redistribution Plan
India's Madras High Court has ruled that cryptocurrencies constitute legal property under Indian law. The decision blocks WazirX from reallocating a customer's 3,532 XRP tokens to cover losses stemming from the exchange's $234 million security breach in July 2024. The court rejected WazirX's proposed loss socialization mechanism, finding no contractual basis for spreading the deficit across all users.
